A propane space heater is an excellent source of supplementary or emergency heat. Yet, homeowners may not use these heaters frequently enough to be familiar with the best care practices for them.

Clean The Heater's Burners

Regularly cleaning the heaters burners is necessary for keeping the unit operating safely and efficiently. While propane is a very clean burning fuel, carbon and other residues can gather on the burners. A set schedule for cleaning these burners may not be practical as the rate at which they become dirty can vary depending on the frequency of use, the quality of the fuel and other factors. Prior to using the space heater, the burners should be inspected, and if you notice a visible layer of residue or soot on them, you should clean them before using the heater.

Be Careful With Where You Put The Space Heater

A space heater can generate tremendous heater in a specific direction. As a result, it is important to be mindful of where you are positioning the heater. If you place it too close to walls or furniture, it may be possible to cause heater damage. Additionally, placing the heater near highly flammable materials can represent a sizable safety risk. Ideally, the heater should be at least several feet from the nearest object to avoid the risk of fire or heat damage occurring. This will also have the benefit of providing better circulation for the warmth being released by the heater.

Check The Fuel Level After Each Use

After each time you use the space heater, you should review the propane tank's fuel level. This will allow you to determine whether you will need more fuel for the next time that you use the heater. It will also provide you with a better sense for the rate at which the heater burns its fuel. Some individuals may assume that checking the fuel prior to using the heater will be more efficient, but this may not be the most practical solution when you are using the space heater for emergency situations.

Ensure There Is A Working Carbon Monoxide Detector In The Room

A poorly maintained or otherwise malfunctioning space heater can produce potentially hazardous levels of carbon monoxide. While this is an unlikely problem to encounter, it is serious enough to warrant proactive steps to address. This can be done by having a working carbon monoxide detector in the room where the space heater will be used.
